PrefaceSince the last history of Toppenish was published by Dr. Hiram Johnson in 1927,  the Toppenish HistoricaI Society members felt that an update should be written which would include additional information and feature family histories of people who have lived and worked in Toppenish and the surrounding area and contributed to its growth.   Edith Foster and Lowell Evans volunteered to co-chair this effort, and asked for volunteers to serve on the committee.
Although the call went out for families to submit stories fairly soon after the decision was made to put together the book, the first priority was to ensure there would be adequate funding for the project. To this end, the Society had a variety of fundraising projects – from selling home-made lye soap, to sponsoring computer classes taught by Greg Cole at Heritage College in Toppenish.
Once a pre-determined goal was reached, the work of collecting and editing stories began in earnest, which proved to be no small task. The submission of the story by the family was but the first step in the rather lengthy process of  getting the story into print: keying the story into a computer and printing it out, checking for historical accuracy, editing, making corrections, re-editing, more corrections keyed in, printing the story again and getting final approval from the submitting family, more corrections keyed in, and finally, turning the results over to the printer.
After many months of this collective effort between Toppenish area families and members of the book committee, the dream came to fruition.
